Iowa State (Big 12) 2013

College:  Iowa State (Big 12)
Year:   2013
Game:   Texas 31 Iowa State 30
Rating:  9 out of 10
Cost Index:  Ticket:  20 dollars, lodging 6 dollars, gas to and from Ames:  appoximately 100 dollars for a total of 126 dollars
Tickets:  Cheap
Stadium:  Jack Trice Stadium is everything a college football stadium should be.  It functional while having it's own character.  They build the stadium into the ground so you actually walk up a hill to enter the grandstand and then either walk up for the upper deck or down for the field level seats.  On all four corners of the field (see pics) there are hills that fans can sit on and wait for the officials to make some egregious calls against Iowa State.

The area around the stadium is perfect for tail gating.  It's surrounded on three sides by parking lots and fields.  The stadium is named for an African American student who died playing football for Iowa State back in the 20s.

The campus itself is pristine, walking around there was like walking through Central Park.  The women at Iowa State are stunning.  10x better than it's in state cousin.

Description:  Sometimes I forget why I go to some of the more obscure schools.  Not that Iowa State is obscure but it's not mentioned in the same breath as the big time programs.  I think it should be...I mean this was their biggest game of the year and maybe I caught them on a good day but I was at LSU vs. Georgia a few days ago and the crowd at Jack Trice was every bit as loud as that crowd, cheering on a 1-3 squad.  I included some vids below to provide context.

The game itself was really exciting and filled with controversy.  Iowa State outplayed Texas for the majority of the game (note:  fire Mac Brown now please).  Texas scored on a Hail Mary at the end of the half to take the lead and got bailed out by the officials in the last minute of the game when they ruled that forward progress had been stopped (horrible call).  There were also at least 5 pass interference penalties, some on back to back plays.  Some of the pass interference penalties were legitimate but some where not and they rarely called holding on Texas (maybe one or two).  I've always thought that if you are going to call PI tight then you need to call holding tight as well.  Just a really poor job by the Big12 officials in this game.

One more discussion point:  the crowd was the best I've ever been around.  There was almost no obnoxious behavior (except, of course, for the asshole seated right behind me that openly rooted for Texas players to get injured but yelled at his kid for using the word God out of context.  Religion everybody! Making people's lives better for 5000 years!  He, of course was a old, frail half man who never got near a football field of any consequence, funny how that works).  I digress, but given how badly the refs butchered this game they had every reason to be obnoxious but they were not, they were just loud, involved in the game and knowledgeable.  This made an already great experience that much better. Not a lot of bros running around or frat boy bullshit either.

Don’t Miss:  Hanging around the tail gate staring at the co-eds like a dirty old man (bring your sunglasses!)
If you want to make it part of a bigger trip: Tough one as there isn't much in Iowa.  You could merge it with the Iowa State Fair or with a Minnesota game.  It's not too far from Nebraska either.
Avoid:   Attending a game where the officials completely hose the home team.
Attendees:  Bones
