The most appropriate word I can think of to describe Notre Dame is inflated. It's not over rated...Notre Dame is a classic stadium with great tradition. At the same time they have an inflated view of the University and the football team and how they fit into the national conversation. The fan base is comprised mainly of assholes who posses inflated egos. This is fairly normal of Irish-Catholic Americans (of which I am one). It's the prevalent attitude in Boston (another inflated place). I've seen this same attitude in St. Louis.
We were there to see Notre Dame beat up on the University of Massachusetts (UMass), of which I am a graduate. When I say Notre Dame fans are assholes they are assholes in obvious ways (cheering as good ole Notre Dame runs up the score) and they are assholes in a more subtle fashion (I would classify almost every guy I saw there as a "Dink"...you know these guys...middle aged white guys who've never been in fist fight....with their stupid man tits....constantly stating the obvious or saying ignorant shit that they heard some second rate sports caster say earlier in the day....just a bunch of short dicked nullos).
The tail gate is average, the drinking scene is below average other than Legends (bar across from Notre Dame Stadium). I obviously travel a lot and this is only the third time I've been to ND. I often question myself: why haven't I gone more? It's only 90 minutes away. After hanging around there for about 45 minutes I remembered why I never go there. The same reasons I got sick of Boston is why I don't bother with ND. Maybe I'll go back again some day, but I'm not in a rush.
The game itself was competitive for longer than expected. UMass hung in there on offense. They actually have a pretty good offense but their defense is still FCS quality. Regardless of my feelings for Notre Dame's fan base their football team is excellent. Brian Kelly is a great coach, he's assembled a deep roster and he knows how to coach on game day. Injuries have affected them this year, but I think they'll be in the playoff at some point over the next couple of years.
