Nebraska (BIG 10) 2011

College:  Nebraska (Big 10)
Year:    2011
Games:   Nebraska 51 Washington 38
Rating:   7 out of 10
Cost:  High
Tickets:   Moderate
Stadium:   Memorial Stadium was a little disappointing. It was jammed into a corner of a campus surrounded by a bunch of other buildings.  No room to breath, seemed a little too big.

Description:  Sometimes you are surprised by a place, sometimes a place is exactly what you expect.  In this case the trip to Lincoln was exactly what I expected.   A nice, polite, ultimately forgettable football experience.  I didn’t have a bad time, notice there was nothing to avoid, but it wasn’t a great time either.

One thing I felt when I was there was that Lincoln was a bit of an angry scene after the game. The drinking after the game felt like a fight could break out at any moment.  I felt the same way at Iowa.  It could be me or it could have been something tangible. In hindsight this was very surprising given how much fun we had at the CWS.
We had a river campsite on the Platte, that was excellent.
Don’t Miss:   Camping on the Platte River
If you want to make it part of a larger trip:  Lincoln is pretty isolated but you could pair it up with Kansas City (really good spot), Manhattan, KS or Ames, IA.
Avoid:
Attendees:  Bones, Polychronopolus

  1. I went to college in Lincoln, and i never felt as if a fight was going to break out. Also, i've only been to a few other stadiums, but i like the fact that Memorial Stadium is a part of the campus, and not isolated. Just one guy's opinions.

    1. First, thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. Didn't think anyone was actually reading it.

Any of my posts or comments should be taken with a grain of salt. I was only there for one game (small sample size) and my observations are certainly affected by my mood on that day and my overall temperament. After the game I went down to the main street (can't remember what it's called) and all the bars were over crowded with all the bros and that's where I think I sensed the tension. This scene occurs in most places, I just happened to stumble upon it in Lincoln and hence my comments.

As far as the stadium being part of campus let me clear that up: Memorial Stadium is an excellent structure and I think all stadiums should be on campus. If my memory serves Memorial is surrounded by buildings and a highway so there isn't much room to tailgate, I think it's generally slightly better when the stadium is off on it's own a bit with space around it. There is a tricky balance to this: Iowa State for example is at one extreme where all of the athletic facilities are in their own section but they can get away with this because that's a college town while Lincoln is more condensed. A better comparison would be Ohio State or Wisconsin that have urban campuses in similar sized cities. They each have lots on one or two sides of their respective stadiums which I think works a little bit better.

Again, thanks for the comment. Have you traveled to any Nebraska road games?
