Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo/Lickety, Lickety, Zoo Zoo/Who, Wah, Wah, Who/Give 'em Hell, TCU!"
A lame, yet somehow effective chant.  I think it's due to it's goofiness and nostalgic feel.

The first trip of 2016 was down to Fort Worth for an early season renewal of a classic Southwest Conference Rivaly.  TCU had not played Arkansas in 25 years and this one was the first in a home and home series between the two.  We saw a monster, double overtime thriller!  We went to the largest Honkeytonk in the world!  We got some kick ass BBQ! We nailed this trip with a combination of preparation and a little bit of luck.

Let's start with an observation:  Modern day Forth Worth is grittier version of how I imagine Austin to have been in the 1980s.  Now, I'm not saying it's nearly as interesting or as dynamic as Austin.  I am saying there is a lot of potential there.

Got there on Friday evening and immediately went to Angelo's BBQ.  Excellent food for not much money.  I got the Jalopeno sausage, Polychronopolis got the tacos.  We both drank a couple of Shiners.  From there we went to the Forth Worth Stockyards.  Yea, it's touristy but in a good way.  The center of this universe is Billy Bob's, the worlds largest Honkeytonk. They are joking about that.  If you head down to Fort Worth you should spend an evening there.  They have professional bull riding in the goddamn bar, it's that big.  We hung out for a bit and had a few more Shiners and watched a very disappointing country band (Reckless Kelly -- there was nothing reckless about them).  We ended up in Downtown Fort Worth.

Glad we hit Billy Bob's, when I go to Fort Worth next time I will hit the other bars in the Stockyard district.  I'll avoid downtown and spend some time in the Fairmont neighborhood (near south side).

On Saturday we slept in, got up and watched Central Michigan beat Oklahoma State on a Hail Mary.  Actually we did not watch this as I shut the game off with 10 seconds left thinking it was impossible for Central to win.  I was wrong!  Now they did win on a referee error but Oklahoma State never should have let it get that far. I think that is the game we will look back on when Mike "I'm a man!  I'm forty!" is fired and they bring Les Miles back in December.

We headed over to the area by TCU and walked around campus a bit.  Very small campus, more in line size wise with a 1-AA school compared to a Power Conference.  I can't think of a Power Five campus with a smaller footprint, the closest I can think of is Duke.  Lunch was had at the Mellow Mushroom, a very solid southern college town pizzia chain.   Get the house special.

Amon Carter was rebuilt in 2012 and is impeccable.  It reminds me of Kansas State's new stadium, I believe they were built around the same time and it would not surprise me if it were designed by the same architecture firm.  TCU's mascot is called the Super Frog and, of course, in one end zone TCU has a Frog Horn. I'll give credit here, it's not nearly as lame as it sounds or nearly as lame as a lot of other places.

The game itself....started out very bland.  Arkansas was up 13-0 at the half.  They were handling TCU on both sides of the ball.  TCU came out and scored on their first drive of the third quarter to make it 13-7 but after that Arkansas continued to control the game.  They lined up for a field goal that would have put them ahead 23-7 and the kid missed it.  Before you knew it TCU ahead 28-20.  Kenny Hill is no great QB but he can run and he kept feeding the ball to Kavonte Turpin who had a huge game (7 for 126 yards).

On the other side, Arkansas has a really good QB in Austin Allen. He led them down the field late to score a TD to get Arkansas within 2. Then they ran a gadget play (see below) to hit the 2pt conversion.  Hill promptly took TCU down the field and got them in field goal range...only to have the kick blocked, sending the game into OT.

Both teams traded TDs in the first OT (there is nothing more nerve racking than a college kicker lining up for a PAT in OT).  Then TCU kicked a field goal and it opened the door for Arkansas and they walked right through it Bielema style. Game over.

After the game we witnessed some TCU fans calling Arkansas fans cousin fuckers, thus solving a mystery -- evidently everyone things people in Arkansas fuck their first cousins, not just Yankees.

Keep an eye on Arkansas.  I don't think they'll win the SEC West, they have a murderous schedule, but most of that schedule is at home. They also are one of the only teams that can match up against Alabama. They will have a lot to say about how things play out in the SEC this year.

On the way out of town we grabbed a coffee at a hipster coffee shop in Fairmont called Avoca coffee.  Easy, cheap trip to start the season.  Already witnessed one of 2016 better games.  Great way to start the year.

If you want to make it part of a larger trip:  Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Houston
Don't Miss:  Forth Worth Stockyards, Angelos BBQ
Avoid:  Downtown Fort Worth
Attendees:  Bones, Polychronopolous
